Perfectly Posed?

We’ve all seen them—the “perfectly posed” studio portraits from places like JCPenney. And maybe you’ve even found yourself wondering: How do they get their pictures so perfect? The smiles, the clothes, the hair—everything in place?

But here’s the truth: I can’t stand those portraits.

Why?
Because they rarely represent the actual people in them.

I mean, how many families do you know who stiffly smile at each other in perfect formation every day? Maybe one? (And even then… I’ve got questions.)

Real family photo sessions aren’t supposed to look like a catalogue. They’re about capturing who you truly are—your love, your laughter, the way your kids lean into you when they’re feeling shy, or how your partner sneaks a glance at you when you’re not looking.

There’s magic in the mess.

This is You

When I’m behind the camera, I’m not looking for robotic smiles or rigid poses. I’m watching for the spark—the heckling between siblings, the quick squeeze of a parent’s hand, the moment your little one bursts into giggles.

Because those are the moments you’ll want to remember.

Those are the photos that will make you pause every time you pass them on your wall. The ones that will bring you back to how that season of your life felt—not just how it looked.

So if you’ve got a session coming up, here’s my best advice:

Let go.

Let go of the idea that you have to show up as a “perfect” version of your family.

Let go of the stress of getting everyone to smile at the same time.

Instead, lean into what makes your family yours.

Trust that we’ll get beautiful portraits—ones where everyone looks their best—and we’ll also get something even more special:

Portraits that feel like home.

Portraits that hold your love, your stories, and your connection.

And that’s the kind of perfection that actually matters.
